REC 463 Senior Practicum is an integral part of a student's total educational preparation. It should reflect the content and objectives of the core and option curriculum, and provide students with the confidence and self-assurance that is essential in carrying out professional duties and responsibilities. The Practicum offers a structured and systematic opportunity for students to develop professional behavior, knowledge, and skills and apply theory to practice. Click here for a partial listing of past internship sites.

REC 463 allows students a gradual and smooth transition from the classroom to the workplace. Students must always be supervised by a full-time staff member of the agency and should select an internship appropriate to their curriculum option, personal needs, and career goals.

REC 463 provides a meaningful full-time experiential learning opportunity requiring a minimum of 480 clock hours during a continuous 12 week minimum term. This course offers 12 credit hours to students in the Department of Recreation and Park Administration.

Purpose of REC 463

The primary purpose of REC 463 is to provide an experiential learning program to further the professional growth of students.

Specific purposes of REC 463 include:

1. Provide the University with a setting for the practical experience portion of the total preparation program for entry level professionals.

2. Provide an opportunity for practitioners in the field to serve the profession and cooperate in the preparation of new professionals.

3. Provide an avenue of communications between recreation and leisure service agencies and the University.

4. Provide the student with experiences which will provide a more complete understanding of the role of agencies offering recreation opportunities and leisure services.

5. Provide students with a practical experience in which to plan and build a future career as a professional employee.

6. Provide the student with a practical setting to put into actual practice the knowledge and understanding acquired in the University course work, previous fieldwork, and related professional experiences.

7. Provide the student with a setting which will allow the opportunity to discover professional strengths and weaknesses.
